You know back at the beginning of the pandemic when ppl were saying that if you drank water it would wash covid down into your stomach which would allow your stomach acid to kill it? My work started letting us drink water on our shifts because of that. Like we were allowed to keep water bottles at the till. Because of that.

What’s so awful and hope-eroding about the pandemic at this point is how consistently the value of life is cheapened before our eyes. The number of deaths go up. We are appalled and scared. The number of deaths go down, we talk about the economy. Hospital wards are full to bursting. The number of deaths go up. That number isn’t as scary as it was. We can get through that. The number goes down. It’s not zero. It’s hundreds and thousands, but it’s less than before and there are profits to be made. The number goes up. We’ve seen worse. The numbers go by. We don’t blink an eye anymore. They’re just numbers. The profits go up and the deaths go up and it’s business as usual. People are dying. People are always dying. It doesn’t make your stomach drop anymore. The number goes down. The economy goes down. Add another covid booster shot, make the numbers go the right way. My neighbor gets evicted because he can’t work anymore due to Covid side effects. Make him a number. People live out of their cars. But they didn’t die, don’t count them. Restaurants are open. Shops are open. People are dying. It’s not scary anymore. 526 Covid deaths yesterday. That’s not so bad. This is normal. It’s all numbers. 4.5 million dead around the world. How many is that? Is that a lot? I don’t know anymore. I feel sick.

My disdain for cops is institutional, not individual. Just because you may have a positive personal relationship with someone who is a cop doesn’t change the fact that the law enforcement system in this country is rooted in white supremacy and is used to repress and control the working class while protecting the elite.
All cops have signed up to enforce a system which is oppressing marginalized people in this country on a daily basis. Your personal relationship with an agent of oppression does not change this fact.
Treat a cop just like you treat a gun when you don’t know whether it’s loaded or not. Assume that it is loaded and that it could cause someone’s death at any time. Remember that a cop, unlike most firearms, has no safety mechanism or standard method for “clearing” them. Never point a cop at anyone whose blood you could not accept having on your hands.
Lots of queer artists getting screwed, too. (And especially queer bipoc artists)
And that’s to say nothing of the extremely creepy trend of “we plan to cyberstalk every one of your accounts to police what you do in your free time so don’t create anything the mods personally dislike or we will kick you out for it” that I’ve seen among multiple zines. Been seeing that specially abused to target queer and bipoc artists (though it’s used against everybody, it’s disproportionately used against some people vs others)
Like zines didn’t used to police content you made to fill a prompt 10 years ago. But now shit like that’s getting dug up to slander people and kick them out after they put in hours of underpaid–or, worse UNpaid–work for a zine.
